I just saw a well-intended post saying that Luigi must be set up because they have footage of suspect leaving hostel at 5:34 and outside Hilton at just 7 minutes later 5:41 and people have "proved" that this is impossible - and they're citing biking times on maps which shows a fastest time of 23 minutes with routes like this:
I've seen other people claim that they're familiar with biking in UWS and this sort of speed is impossible, but I suspect these are people who have only ridden CitiBikes e-bikes which max out around 12 mph and this route would still take around 15 mins (this route would also likely require multiple stops at traffic lights).
Listen, maybe he was set up, but 7 minutes from USW to Hilton midtown is 100% doable (especially before 6am).
I've biked in NYC for 12 years now and from the UWS hostel (I know the area well, I go to grocery store a couple blocks away) you'd cross over to Central Park (which is quiet road even during the day and would probably be empty at 5:30am), continue on bike lane for 4 blocks to enter Central Park at 100th st, then bike all the way down to the 6th ave exit of Central Park where its 4 blocks until Hilton.
That's 3.4 miles, and would include 4 sets of traffic lights outside the park (inside the park you just ignore them - especially at 5:30 am when there will just be runners and other cyclists).
On a Class 3 e-bike that does 28 miles per hour that's 7 minutes and 18 seconds which is well within margin of error of different cameras being a little bit out of sync etc.
Google Maps etc shows fastest time as 23 minutes biking because they use a biking speed of 8 miles per hour, and their routing algorithm doesn't know enough about biking in NYC to plan optimal routes.
I just looked up some tracking of me biking in Central Park, and my top average speed for a mile was 18 mph (probably on a downhill section) and that's me on a single speed fixed gear bike. Class 3 pedal assist e-bikes have a speed of 28 mph, some e-bikes have speeds 30-50 mph. NYC does only allows e-bike speeds up to 25 mph but there are a lot of people who use these faster e-bikes.

đ Flashback Friday #5 đ - Youtube
Before YouTube became a corporate machine full of sponsorships, algorithms, and influencer culture, it was chaotic, weird, and deeply personal. It was a time when youâd stumble across a random vlogger in their bedroom, an over-the-top skit, or a grainy anime music video set to Linkin Parkâand it all felt real.
Back then, there were no forced ads, no algorithm pushing content, and no pressure to monetize everything. People made videos because they wanted to, not because they were chasing views. Classics like Charlie Bit Me, Potter Puppet Pals, and Shoes by Kelly werenât manufactured viral hitsâthey just happened. And the comment sections? Absolute wild west energy.
Once Google bought YouTube in 2006, things started shifting toward polished, advertiser-friendly content, which eventually resulted in a lot of censorship and stifling of creativity. While thereâs still great stuff on YouTube today, that old, uncurated magic is missing. The Small Web is all about bringing that back to the internetâcontent made for passion, not profit.
đ Do you miss old-school YouTube? Did you have your own vlog channel? Whatâs one early YouTube video that lives in your head rent free? Let us know!

Auto Subtitle: The Future of Video Content Accessibility

In todayâs digital age, video content dominates the internet. From social media to e-learning platforms, videos are the preferred medium for communication. However, not everyone can consume video content effortlessly. This is where Auto Subtitle technology comes into play, revolutionizing accessibility and engagement.
Auto Subtitle refers to the automatic generation of subtitles using artificial intelligence (AI) and speech recognition. This technology ensures that videos are inclusive, searchable, and more engaging for a global audience. In this article, we will explore how Auto Subtitle works, its benefits, and its impact on content creation.
How Auto Subtitle Works
Auto Subtitle relies on advanced AI algorithms to convert spoken language into written text. The process involves:
Speech Recognition â AI transcribes audio into text in real-time or post-production.
Language Processing â The system identifies different languages and dialects.
Timing Synchronization â Subtitles are matched with the correct timestamps.
Error Correction â Some tools allow manual editing for improved accuracy.
Popular platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Zoom already use Auto Subtitle to enhance user experience.
Benefits of Auto Subtitle
1. Improved Accessibility
Millions of people worldwide are deaf or hard of hearing. Auto Subtitle ensures they can enjoy videos without barriers. Additionally, non-native speakers benefit from reading along with spoken content.
2. Enhanced SEO and Discoverability
Search engines cannot "watch" videos, but they can index text. Auto Subtitle generates searchable text, improving a videoâs ranking on Google and YouTube.
3. Increased Engagement
Studies show that videos with subtitles have higher watch times. Many viewers watch videos on mute (e.g., in public spaces), making Auto Subtitle essential for retention.
4. Cost and Time Efficiency
Manual transcription is time-consuming and expensive. Auto Subtitle provides instant results, saving creators hours of work.
5. Multilingual Support
AI-powered Auto Subtitle tools can translate subtitles into multiple languages, broadening audience reach.
Top Auto Subtitle Tools in 2024
1. YouTube Auto Captions
YouTubeâs built-in Auto Subtitle feature uses Googleâs speech recognition to generate captions. Creators can edit them for better accuracy.
2. Otter.ai
A popular tool for live transcription, Otter.ai is widely used in meetings, interviews, and video production.
3. Rev.com
Rev offers automated and human-generated subtitles, ensuring high precision for professional content.
4. Descript
This tool combines Auto Subtitle with video editing, allowing users to edit videos by modifying the transcribed text.
5. SubtitleBee
An AI-powered platform that generates and translates subtitles in minutes, ideal for social media content.
Challenges of Auto Subtitle Technology
Despite its advantages, Auto Subtitle is not perfect. Some limitations include:
Accuracy Issues â Background noise, accents, and technical jargon can lead to errors.
Lack of Context â AI may misinterpret homophones (e.g., "there" vs. "their").
Limited Customization â Some tools offer minimal formatting options for subtitles.
However, as AI improves, these challenges are gradually being addressed.
The Future of Auto Subtitle
The demand for Auto Subtitle will only grow as video consumption increases. Future advancements may include:
Real-Time Translation â Instant subtitles in multiple languages during live streams.
Emotion Detection â AI could adjust subtitle styles based on the videoâs tone (e.g., bold for excitement).
Better Integration â Seamless Auto Subtitle features across all video platforms.

Improve website UX and sales funnels to increase conversions.

Focus on multimedia-rich content to align with AI-driven search results.

RECENT SEO & MARKETING NEWS FOR ECOMMERCE, March 2024
Welcome to my roundup of SEO and marketing news and useful resources for ecommerce businesses, March edition. There is a lot going on with Google, and some really strong marketing pieces this time around, so let's get right to it.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINESÂ
Google launched both a core algorithm update and spam updates on March 5, with the spam update ending on the 20th. Core updates now include the Helpful Content algorithm. In early observations, Etsy and Reddit both picked up visibility in the UK.Â
The Helpful Content algorithm updates late last year destroyed a lot of sitesâ Google traffic. Avoid the things they had in common. You can read the full study here.Â
Ecommerce sites were some of the biggest losers in Google visibility in 2023, with Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, Target and Best Buy in the top 10 of sites whose Google appearances slipped.Â
New to Google SEO? Theyâve revamped their SEO starter guide for people like you. And if you are more advanced and want to learn how to optimize your website product pages, this is a good overview.Â
This lengthy article on backlinks for ecommerce websites covers pretty much all the angles, including the really difficult ones.Â
Reminder that if you want to rank on Google for a search term, you need to look at what is already ranking, and make decisions based on that content. [video and transcript] This works for most search engines, not just Google.Â
Yes, Google crawls âhigh qualityâ content more often. I used to refer to this as Google thinking the page is âinterestingâ, so I guess I will need to change my wording...
While Google sends the most traffic to websites, people spend a lot more of their online time elsewhere. Market where people are, not just where your stats say they came from.Â
Sadly, Google has stopped providing caches of website pages in its search results. While you can still see the caches of some pages by using the Google search Cache:[page link] as in cache:https://cindylouwho-2.tumblr.com that will eventually stop working as well. Bing still provides caches, but unfortunately both it and the Wayback Machine do not crawl often enough to give really recent results most of the time.Â
Missed Google news in February? Hereâs your update. And just in case you are really behind, here is January.Â
Not Google
Unsure if your website has enough good backlinks? Bing Webmaster Tools will now tell you if you donât.Â
Yandex - the top search engine in Russia - was sold by its Dutch ownership group to a consortium in Russia.Â
SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site
General
A US study of social media use found that the most popular site was YouTube, with 83% of adults using it. Two-thirds of American adults use Facebook, while TikTok is up to â
of the US population.Â
Because they do change periodically, here are the latest image and video sizes recommended for the top social media platforms. [infographic]
Bluesky is now open to everyone - it was previously invite-only.Â
Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)
Meta has introduced several changes to its Ad options, applying to Facebook and Instagram.Â
Meta had a great 4th quarter in 2023, with revenue, users, and earnings per share up. âFast-growing upstarts Temu and Shein, which originated in China, have been pouring money into ads on Facebook and Instagram. Li said on Thursday that revenue from China-based advertisers accounted for 10% of sales for the year and 5 percentage points of growth.â
Instagram
An updated post on Instagram's algorithm and how it works.Â
Instagram is still beta testing longer Reels for some users.Â
If your account is a brand account, you can now run ads on Instagram with coupon codes right in them. (Some Facebook users can already do this.)
LinkedIn
Among other recent changes on LinkedIn, the algorithm is now looking to boost important content longer than just the first day or two after publication.Â
Pinterest
Pinterest has its own stats package, called Pinterest Analytics, but only for âBusinessâ accounts. They show how many people clicked on the outgoing links, how many people saw your pin on their screen, and much more. Hereâs everything you need to know.Â
Reddit
Reddit successfully launched on the stock market this past week, but questions remain about how this will change the site.Â
Google is paying Reddit to scrape its content through the API instead of from the web.Â
Snapchat
Snap was a little later than most tech companies doing layoffs recently, waiting until February 5 to let 10% off staff go.Â
Threads
Threads is so new that the algorithm is bound to change a lot in the next year, but for right now, here is how it works.Â
TikTok
There is an overwhelming amount of info out there on the US attempt to either ban TikTok or force its sale, and much of it is incomplete, so I will let you Google to your heartâs content if you want to learn more. If you are relying on TikTok to drive sales, this would be a good time to make sure you diversify your promotional strategy.Â
You can now track trending terms on TikTok through the Creator Search Insights section. âCreator Search Insights will highlight frequently searched topics, which creators can organize by category (for example, tourism, sports, science) or tailor to their content type with the âFor Youâ option. Additionally, creators can filter for âcontent gapâ topics, which are highly searched but have relatively few videos on TikTok covering them.â
TikTok may be testing a photo app, which would obviously compete with Instagram.Â
Twitter
What? Twitter may have lied about its Super Bowl ad performance? Iâm so not shocked.Â
Tumblr
Tumblr will be selling data access to AI companies.Â
YouTube
This is a pretty decent article on YouTube SEO.Â
(CONTENT) MARKETING (includes blogging, emails, and strategies)Â
Small and micro-businesses need an email list. An email list is:Â Â
portable (unlike most social media followers or marketplace buyers)Â
is available to almost everyone, as we all need at least one email address if we are online
less susceptible to the whims of algorithms (unlike SEO, marketplaces, social etc.)Â Â
I keep seeing people argue that no one opens emails, but the chart in the article above is proof that is still wrong. (My blog email list averages close to a 70% open rate, depending on the topic and the time I send it. My jewellery email list - which I hardly ever send to - still has an over 30% open rate. My click rates are well above the industry averages, usually 30 to 40% of all recipients for the blog list. These are much better numbers than social, and astronomically better than my clickthrough rate on Google and other search engines.)
Gmail and Yahoo both changed how they handle bulk emails such as newsletters in February. Hereâs what you need to know on the basics, including authenticating yourself so your email gets through.Â
Find out how to get people to read all the way to the end of your content.Â
Get ready for April marketing with 5 topical ideas. National Handmade Day is April 6.Â
We should all think twice before deciding to use AI to create content. âCirca 2024, generative AI does not produce new ideas or even develop its own conclusions. Rather, it regurgitates information that it has indexed.â Not convinced? Hereâs another article. âAI-generated content represents the literal âaverage of everything online.â
ONLINE ADVERTISING (EXCEPT INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL MEDIA AND ECOMMERCE SITES)Â
Google Ads can now be tracked in Google Analytics 4.Â
Both Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising were up in the 4th quarter of 2023.Â
STATS, DATA, TRACKINGÂ
Google Analytics 4 tracks organic traffic differently than the previous version. Hereâs how to figure it out.Â
BUSINESS & CONSUMER TRENDS, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICEÂ
Iâve probably posted this specific article before, but it is worth another read: how to communicate with customers. For example, âMirroring your customerâs tone lets them know youâre on their side. If a customer is formal, for example, hold back on the LOLs. If theyâre more casual, relax your tone.â
According to a US study, Generation Z is skewing the traditional marketing funnel. âPer Archrivalâs data, 77 per cent of Gen Zs and 79 per cent of millennials in the US are actively seeking style inspiration at least monthly, with almost half of those looking for style inspiration on social media. When asked where they learn about new brands, products and experiences, video reigns supreme: YouTube is the most popular platform with Gen Zs, followed by TikTok, then Instagram.â
Trend alert: bag charms are back.Â
IMAGES, VIDEO, GRAPHIC DESIGN, & FREE ONLINE TOOLS
Almost all of these 12 video tools are free, and some can be used on your phone.Â
MISCELLANEOUS
This is an older piece, but it checks out: IKEA Hacks for Craft Show Displays. A few of these could be done with non-IKEA items.Â

thinking about the current state of internet literacy actually makes me feel a bit ill, to be honest. it makes me feel scared for the future. editing is so easy and ai has become so commonplace and so well-trained (thanks to the enthusiastic participation of those using ai for "art" and those using ai for memes) that now we cannot even trust what is documented in photos and videos online. there is a serious dearth of education, resources to build an education, and even interest in getting an education in internet literacy. we live in an age of misinformation and so many of us are just more than happy to join in as long as it serves our own interests. it is genuinely very scary. yes i'm a dream fan so of course i care that he was just made a victim of a years-long smear campaign that was widely believed online with little to no substantiated evidence to support any of it. but that situation was, and continues to be, just a symptom of a much larger and much more insidious issue. truly, i am scared for the future of information. i don't know how we will be able to verify things, i don't know how we will be able to trust sources, and i don't know how we will be able to trust each other. i'm sure we will find a way, but i just fear the things that will happen and the harm that will be done in the meantime. look at this excerpt from the book "anti-social media" released 5 years ago, and just think about how things have progressed:
there are a lot of reasons to not trust institutions such as universities and government agencies, but we can't trust anything now and that may be an even more concerning issue. the author goes on to say "what has changed is the social dynamics of identifying as a member of a group that holds positions like climate change is fictional or vaccines are dangerous have found new ways to assemble and reinforce their practices of acculturation." the stances of fringe groups are becoming more and more mainstream because misinformation and disinformation are often given just as much social prevalence as anything else. i work in a library that holds current events discussions, so i see what happens when people get all of their information from social media and don't take any time to verify or even just think about what they see. because they likely just don't know how to go about that process. i hate to think that it's all willful ignorance, i can't think that or i'll go fucking crazy.
we can't trust each other and we can't trust any institutions of information, but we trust whatever google pushes to the top of the results and whatever twitter's algorithm puts on our for you page. it's dangerous. there is no filtering out the noise, it's just all noise all the time. i'm tired. i'm tired of seeing so much yet feeling like i don't know anything, because i can't know anything.
i'm being pessimistic right now and i don't know if i'm even making sense, i'm just typing out my thoughts, but i just fear for the future of information and i don't know what to do about it. i feel like i'm watching a car crash in slow motion.
#idk if i'll answer any asks about this because it bums me the fuck out to think about LOL i just needed to say it#i hope literally any of this makes sense

Optimizing YouTube Video Titles
1. Use Keywords Strategically

YouTube prioritizes keywords in the first 100-150 characters, so include the primary keyword early.
2. Write a Detailed, Natural-Sounding Description
A well-structured description should include:

A summary of the video content with relevant keywords.
Call-to-action (CTA) to encourage likes, comments, and subscriptions.
Timestamps for longer videos.
Links to related content, social media, or website.

Timestamps make navigation easier and improve watch time.

Hashtags help categorize content and improve discoverability.
Optimizing YouTube Video Tags
1. Use Primary and Secondary Keywords
Tags should include exact-match keywords and variations.
2. Use Long-Tail Keywords
Long-tail keywords improve chances of ranking for specific queries.
3. Include Competitor and Trending Tags
Research competitorsâ tags using tools like VidIQ or TubeBuddy.
4. Add Brand and Channel-Specific Tags
If you have a brand or recurring content series, include branded tags.
Additional YouTube SEO Best Practices
1. Optimize Thumbnails
Thumbnails impact CTR and engagement. Best practices:
Use bold, readable text
Add contrasting colors to stand out
Include faces with expressive emotions
2. Encourage Engagement Signals
The YouTube algorithm favors videos with high engagement:
Ask viewers to like, comment, and share
Encourage subscriptions and bell notifications
Pin a top comment with a call-to-action
3. Monitor Analytics and Adjust Strategies
Check YouTube Studio Analytics for insights:
Click-through rate (CTR) â Improve thumbnails and titles if low.
Watch time and retention â Adjust content format if needed.
Traffic sources â Focus on top-performing platforms.
